Sharon Birch is the owner and safeguarding lead of Footprints Learning for Life Nursery, a nursery school based in Hartlepool that focuses on providing every child with an equal opportunity for a great start in life, regardless of circumstances.

Career Overview

Before Birch founded Footprints, she began her career as a police officer in the Metropolitan Police Force, working there between 1985 and 1997. She then spent eight-and-a-half years as a Child Protection Detective operating in the northeast of England, before establishing Footprints in 2006.

Footprints was founded on an ethos that one size does not fit all, and today they cater for individual requirements irrespective of need, culture, race, gender and abilities. Footprints have been awarded Gold Investors in People, (2010) won the prestigious Nursery World award for Team Development in 2011, and have won a number of local business awards in Hartlepool. They have been shortlisted as finalists this year in the prestigious Nursery World industry awards for Inclusive Practice. 

Between 2014 and 2017, Birch also worked as an independent safeguarding consultant. She is also a published author of 250 short stories and one book published by Harper Collins under a pseudonym. She is currently in the process of writing a crime novel.

Education

Birch has completed a range of qualifications at both Teesside University and The Open University. During her time at Teesside from 1998 to 2002, she completed certificates in Joint Investigation - Child Protection, Ethics & Decision Making and Justice, Crime & Ethics.

Between 2002 and 2010, Birch studied at The Open University and attained certificates in Social Sciences, Working with Children & Families and Working Together for Children. She also completed a Diploma in Literature & Creative Writing as well as a Bachelor’s Degree, achieving a First.
