Coronavirus update: Sunak leads briefing

Published by Ross Hindle on April 8th 2020, 4:04pm

Rishi Sunak said at today's coronavirus press conference that Boris Johnson's condition was "improving".

The chancellor said the PM was "sitting up in bed" and "engaging positively with the clinical team".

He said that Mr Johnson's situation "reminds us how indiscriminate this disease is" and that "nearly everyone will know someone affected".

In the UK, 938 people have died from coronavirus in the past 24 hours, leading to a total death toll of over 7,000.

In Europe, the president of the ERC scientific research council has resigned after just three months, saying he had "lost faith in the system". A statement from the council said that his resignation had followed a vote of no confidence and that Professor Mauro Ferrari "displayed a lack of engagement".

In the US, Twitter boss Jack Dorsey announced he would be donating $1 billion -- 28 per cent of his wealth -- to help fight the pandemic.

And the WTO has reported that they anticipate a drop of between 13 and 32 per cent in international trade in 2020, which would be worse than the recession in 2008.

The next Leaders Council update will follow tomorrow morning.
